Justice Dept. Hires Lawyer for Possible Anti-Trust Suit Against Google

The Justice Department has hired a well-known litigator, former Walt Disney Co. vice chairman Sanford Litvack to prepare for a possible antitrust challenge against Google.  Google’s advertising partnership with Yahoo has raised eyebrows as the two companies market share accounts for more than 80% of search-advertising.

Although the Justice Dept. has been interviewing witnesses and issuing subpoenas for weeks investigating the claim, this does not mean an actual case will be filed.

Advertisers Protest to Justice Dept. On Google-Yahoo Partnership

The Association of National Advertisers, representing 400 companies and whose board counts executives from some of the biggest companies, announced a written objection was sent to the Justice Department to protest the proposed Google-Yahoo search advertising partnership. Read more

Icahn and Microsoft move to oust Yahoo’s Board

Hot off the press tonight, it looks as though all hopes for any kind of truce between the triad of Yahoo, Icahn (who owns a 5% share of Yahoo) and Microsoft have been abandoned. Icahn filed the nominating papers to replace the current 9-member Yahoo Board with directors who will approve Microsoft’s bid. Get ready at the OK Corral, because the showdown for that battle is set for August 1st with a shareholder vote. Icahn has accused the current board of being more interested in their own jobs and interests rather than seeing the benefits of Microsoft’s offer for shareholders. Read more

Yahoo to Microsoft: Your Bid is a Load of Yahooey

Feeling like a politely worded episode out of the 1960’s cult classic “Yippee, Yappee and Yahooey”, where three gallant heroes battle a fire breathing dragon among other villains, Yahoo has responded to Microsoft’s “unsolicited” bid to acquire Yahoo (as in takeover) with a battle of words. Microsoft Chief executive Steve Ballmer and Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang are dueling in language as the heated letters between the two giants were released earlier today. Read more
